Dental Prostheses at NewSmile

Dental prosthetics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the replacement of missing teeth. The term “dental prosthesis” encompasses a range of treatment options, which are selected together with the patient to determine the most suitable aesthetic and functional option.

Dental prostheses are divided into removable and fixed. Fixed prostheses are connected to natural teeth or implants, while removable prostheses rest on the gums and can be removed by the patient.

What should we consider about Dental Prostheses?

Dentures can be partial (replacing only a few missing teeth) or complete (replacing all teeth in the upper, lower, or both arches). To ensure their effectiveness, dental prostheses must meet the following criteria:

  • Functionality: The patient should be able to chew normally and articulate words without difficulty. The prosthesis should allow natural jaw movements, such as opening, closing, lateral movements, advancement, and retraction.
  • Durability: The prosthesis must withstand the forces of chewing and be resistant to fluids. Although it may require adjustments over time, it must be durable and strong.
  • Non-allergenic materials: The prosthesis should be prepared with materials that do not cause allergic reactions and do not damage the mouth.
  • Aesthetics: Artificial teeth should be as similar as possible to the patient’s natural teeth, providing a natural and pleasant appearance.

Hygiene and Care for Dental Prostheses

Maintaining oral hygiene is essential for dentures. Daily cleaning with a toothbrush and cold water should be done after each meal. After cleaning, dentures should be stored in a humid environment to prevent the materials from drying out.
